Floating Row Cover

A lightweight nonwoven fabric laid right over the crop: it protects against frost, extends the season and keeps insects out, while letting light, water and air through. Rolls up to 1.6 m wide x 1,000 m.

The basics

What is a floating row cover?

A floating row cover, also called thermal blanket or agrotextile, is a lightweight nonwoven fabric (polypropylene) laid directly over the crop. It is called floating because it is so light it rests on the plants without crushing them, and needs no structure to hold it up.

The fabric lets light, water and air through, but traps heat. During the day light comes in and the soil warms; at night the cover holds that heat and keeps the temperature underneath several degrees warmer than outside. That creates a microclimate that protects the crop from cold, pests and wind.

By day

Light passes through and warms the soil and the crop.

By night

The cover traps the stored heat, keeping the crop several degrees warmer.

All the time

It physically blocks insects, birds and wind, with no structure to build.

What a row cover does

One simple fabric solves several problems at once, with no structure to build.

Frost protection

Traps soil heat overnight and lifts the temperature under the fabric, preventing cold damage.

Season extension

Plant earlier and harvest later, gaining productive weeks at both ends of the season.

Insect barrier

Physically covers the crop and reduces pests like whitefly and aphids, cutting chemical use.

Light, water & air permeable

You can irrigate right over it and the crop breathes through it, no need to remove it to water.

Common uses

Vegetables & melon

Early protection and pest barrier for open-field vegetables.

Strawberry & berries

Brings flowering forward and protects fruit set from cold in frost-prone areas.

Nurseries & seedbeds

Covers freshly transplanted seedlings while they establish.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a floating row cover?
It is a lightweight nonwoven fabric laid directly over the crop, with no structure. It lets light, water and air through, but traps heat and creates a physical barrier. It is widely used to protect from frost, bring harvests forward and keep pests out.
How does it protect from frost?
At night it traps the heat the soil released during the day, so the temperature under the fabric stays several degrees warmer than outside. That prevents cold damage at flowering and fruit set, key in the highlands where frost hits.
Does it need a structure or hoops?
Not necessarily. The fabric is so light it can rest directly on the crop, which is why it is called floating, and you anchor the edges with soil, staples or sandbags. For delicate crops you can also lay it over low hoops.
Can I irrigate over the row cover?
Yes. The fabric is permeable, so rain or sprinkler water passes through it and you do not need to remove it to water. That saves labor and keeps the crop protected the whole time.
Does it work as an insect barrier?
Yes. By physically covering the crop, it keeps insects like whitefly and aphids off the plant, which reduces pests and chemical use. It is especially useful in the first weeks after transplant.
Which fabric weight should I choose?
It depends on the job. Lighter fabrics mainly act as an insect barrier and light protection; heavier ones give more thermal protection against hard frosts. We help you pick the weight for your crop and climate.
Which crops is it used for?
It works very well for vegetables, melon, strawberries and berries, and for nurseries and freshly transplanted seedlings. In general, any crop that needs early protection from cold or pests.
How many seasons does the fabric last?
With good handling, a UV-stabilized cover can be used for several seasons: lift it carefully, store it dry and out of the sun, and reuse it. How long it lasts depends on the weight and how it is handled in the field.
